John Chrysostom

What about Tamar? When she returned to Judah the items he had given her as a guarantee, she inquired, “Whose are these?” asserting that she had received the fruit of the womb from him. Observe how the one who had previously held her peace now brings forth the most compelling testimonies to declare her righteousness. Just as it was fitting for the accused in such circumstances to present three witnesses, she provides three items entrusted to her: a ring, a cord, and a staff, which served to clearly affirm her innocence. Remaining silent at home, she triumphed in her cause.

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Upon hearing this, Judas declared that the woman ought to face death for her transgressions. Yet, just as his words were about to be enacted, she presented the rod and other items, asserting, ‘I am with child by the owner of these belongings.’ Tamar, though facing death and severe punishment, finds redemption. Although she was accused of immorality, she is saved because she revealed the rod, the ring, and the necklace. She openly acknowledged that she carried in her womb the child of Judas. Ultimately, Christ will liberate the Jewish synagogue from its deserved punishment, provided it bears the signs of its union with Him and demonstrates that it has conceived through Him.
