John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Upon recognizing the situation, Joseph prepared his chariots and set out to meet his father Israel in Goshen. When they came together, he embraced him, overflowing with tears for a considerable time. This moment illustrates a profound truth: it is not unusual for overwhelming joy to manifest in tears. He fell into his father’s arms and wept, not just briefly, but for an extended period. In that moment, Joseph reflected on the depth of his own suffering as well as the hardships his father had faced because of him. He also contemplated the long duration of their separation and the astonishing reality of their reunion. As he embraced his father, tears streamed down his face, expressing both immense joy and gratitude to the Lord for this miraculous encounter.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Joseph went out to greet his father accompanied by chariots and numerous attendants. Upon their meeting, he bowed before Jacob, and they embraced, shedding tears of joy. When Joseph learned that his father Jacob had come, he rose with immense joy, left the city alongside Pharaoh's dignitaries, and approached him with great humility. As soon as Jacob laid eyes on his beloved son, he collapsed with overwhelming affection, exclaiming, ‘Now I can die, having seen your face, dear child; for truly you are alive.’ Together, they praised God. For all these wondrous acts, let us offer glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. To Him belong glory, power, honor, and worship, now and forevermore! Amen.
