John Chrysostom

And He declares that "there shall no more be any flesh destroyed by the waters of the flood, neither shall there be any more flood for the desolation of the earth." Consider how He ensures, time and again, that there will be no further catastrophic destruction, aiming to dispel any uncertainty from the righteous man's thoughts and to instill peace regarding what is to come.

Philaret of Moscow (Drosdow)

19th centuryChurch Father

God establishes a covenant with humanity as the sovereign of all creation, signifying His complete favor by assuring the safety and wholeness of their reign. The essence of this covenant lies in God's commitment to safeguarding, while humanity's role is to trust in this promise and the associated sign (Gen. 9:12).

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

This parable illustrates God's agreement with Noah and the symbol of that promise. The Lord not only vows to refrain from annihilating the earth with a universal flood but also, as a demonstration of His profound love for humanity, establishes a covenant with mankind through Noah and his sons. A covenant signifies a bond founded on the reciprocal commitments of those involved. By forming a covenant with all humanity through Noah and his sons, the Lord God, the One who is self-sufficient, entirely free, and sovereign over all creation, takes on the solemn duty to uphold His assurance not to send another flood. He asks from them only faith in the truth of His promise.

The Lord includes animals in this covenant alongside humans, not because they are required to comply with any obligations, but purely out of love for humanity. Just as He unleashed His wrath on humanity by allowing the flood to impact His creatures, so in His mercy, He commits to sparing those creatures from another widespread destruction.
