    For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son: that whosoever believeth in him may not perish, but may have life everlasting.

    The greatness of God's love lies in what He gave: not an angel or a prophet, but His Only-begotten Son, and that for ungrateful servants, as John Chrysostom stresses. Hilarius of Poitiers and Cyrill of Alexandria conclude that He is the true Son, not a creature. Theophylact of Bulgaria names two blessings for believers: not perishing and eternal life.
