The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Cyril explains that the law provides specific guidance regarding leprosy, scabs, and wounds, stating: “If a man or a woman has an ulcer on the head or in the beard of the head,” and if there is a hollowed area due to the skin deteriorating and settling, and if the hair turns white, then they are undoubtedly a leper and unclean. However, if such symptoms are absent, the one affected by the white rash should "shave off" their head or beard, as it is instructed. After removing their hair, they should present themselves to the priest for examination. If the spot or white rash does not widen but remains localized or diminishes, they can be declared clean again, for this ailment is not leprosy but merely a suspicion that it may be (Leviticus 13:29 ff.).

Palladius asks for clarification on these words. Cyril responds that there are two types of defilement within us: carnal and spiritual. The flesh is soiled by base and impure desires, while the soul and mind are primarily tainted by straying from sound doctrine into harmful beliefs that compromise faith, alongside trickery, false oaths, provocations, pride, disputes, fervor, and all related vices that lead to condemnation for sinfulness. Thus, the law appears to remind us of the passions of the soul, desiring to identify the weaknesses that often afflict the mind; for the head symbolizes the intellect, and the beard signifies mature wisdom, representing a state of completeness.

Therefore, Christ, the supreme Hierarch, observes all that pertains to us and examines our condition closely; He will discern the very depths of the mind and scrutinize our innermost thoughts. Should there be any corruption or shift from right faith to falsehood, or any movement towards moral decay and malice, which are especially detestable to Him, He will cast aside such individuals as defiled and will declare them unclean. This, I assert, signifies suffering from leprosy on the head or beard.
