When confronted, do not premeditate your responses or fret about how to reply; for the Holy Spirit will speak through you. I will grant you wisdom that your adversaries will not be able to refute or withstand... The Jewish conflict commenced, as chronicled by Josephus Flavius, a Jewish historian who experienced it firsthand, but prior to that, the predictions concerning the Apostles' fates were realized. They will first seize you and persecute you, sentencing you to synagogues and prisons, and bringing you before kings and authorities for My name's sake (Luke 21:12). The accounts of Luke, noted in his work, the Acts of the Apostles, along with records from contemporary pagan historians, show that the Apostles, in their quest to preach in all known lands, faced intense animosity from the Jews. These fellow believers denounced them and summoned them to synagogues for judgment, brought false accusations to local leaders, physically attacked them, and colluded with the Gentiles. Following Jewish denunciations, the Apostles were also pursued by the Gentiles; they experienced beatings, stonings, trials before kings and rulers, imprisonment, crucifixion, and execution. However, when interrogated, they did not rehearse their answers, adhering to Christ's promise, trusting that the Holy Spirit would articulate on their behalf (Mark 13:11). Their wise responses astonished the judges and torturers. Persecution did not target only the Apostles; all Christians faced severe hardship, particularly during the reign of Nero, when believers were burned alive to illuminate royal gardens and fed to lions for the entertainment of the pagan populace. Nevertheless, in spite of the brutalities of these persecutions, the proclamation of the Apostles spread widely, and even in Rome, numerous families had members who were secret followers of Christ.
