The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

A wise individual brings joy to their parents and, if they hold the position of a king, brings honor to their nation; however, a sycophant merely deceives those around him, and a rogue provokes the city’s anger. Even a wise person who aligns with a fool cannot find peace and is perpetually despised by those who act unjustly. The integrity and fairness of a ruler have a profound impact not only on their closest aides but also on the well-being of their community. Similarly, sound education influences the future of a son, and discipline shapes the conduct of a servant. It is clear that the unjust sows division among others, degrades himself, and harbors hatred towards his own soul, while the just person is bestowed with honor and stability under the safeguarding hand of the Lord. Just as the path of the unrighteous is detestable to the righteous, so too is the righteous person loathed by the unjust.
