The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

A wise individual brings joy to their parents and, when in a position of leadership, brings honor to their nation; however, a flatterer deceives his peers and a rogue stirs up strife within the city, while even a discerning person who partners with a fool will find no peace, consistently facing animosity from the wicked. The integrity and morality of a leader impact not only their closest associates but also the welfare of the entire community. Similarly, sound instruction shapes the fruitful life of a son, and discipline influences the conduct of a servant. Is it necessary to point out that the unrighteous creates division among his peers, degrades himself, and despises his own soul, whereas the righteous receives honor and safety through the shelter of the Lord? Just as the path of the wicked is detestable to the virtuous, so too, the righteous are reviled by those who act unjustly.
