We are the dwelling of God, for we are His sanctuary, as He intercedes for us, having sacrificed Himself and now living for our sake, so that we may be united in Him. For 'His dwelling was established in the world, and His home in Zion' (cf. Ps. 75:3), which we embody. Yet, who can truly understand these divine realms or what resides within them without the constraints of physical space and materiality? It is troubling, though, if we continually dismiss all that manifests before our inner vision, persistently rejecting these revelations. If we attain an awareness of a certain illumination, conceding the necessity of such rejections, it becomes evident how profoundly true these insights are.

They should be embraced with love, enabling us to elevate ourselves and seek the deeper truths within. Should a mind that is feeble and less pure struggle to comprehend these matters, let it not depart without expressions of affection and a yearning heart. Instead, let it cultivate patience until it is cleansed through faith and prepared by a righteous life to dwell in those holy heights.

Zion represents the land of the Jews, while the true Zion symbolizes the Christian Church. The meanings of the Hebrew names have been transmitted to us in this way: Judea signifies confession, and Israel denotes seeing God. Following Judea comes Israel. Do you wish to behold God? First, confess, and then there will be space for Him within you, for a place has been prepared for Him in the world. If you fail to acknowledge your sins, you essentially contend with God. How can you avoid arguing with the One who condemns what is unpleasing to Him? He reprimands the thief, yet you commend theft; He punishes the drunkard, while you celebrate drunkenness. You are in conflict with God and have not made room for Him in your heart, for His rightful place is in the world.

How do you begin to establish peace with God? You initiate this through confession. The psalm reassures us, 'Begin to confess to the Lord.' What does it mean to 'begin to confess to the Lord'? It signifies aligning yourself with the Lord. In what manner? By finding distaste in the same things that displease Him. He is troubled by your sinful existence; if it is agreeable to you, you are separated from Him; if it causes you distress, then through your confession to Him, you are brought into unity.

His presence is found in the world, specifically within the hearts of the Saints. The Hebrew version states 'in Salim,' which other translators have interpreted as 'in the world.' Consequently, in the world, meaning within the soul or the Church, the fiery darts of the adversary will be vanquished. If this is referring to the lofty regions of Judea and the heavenly Jerusalem, from which ‘sorrow, sadness, and sighing’ (Isaiah 35:10) emerge, then it is clear that there exists a realm of tranquility. His residence in Zion pertains to the mind, that is, to the elevated places, or to the soul.

The Hebrew term refers to 'in Salim,' which appears to correspond to what is known as 'Jerusalem.' Initially known as Salim, it was later called Jebus and ultimately became Jerusalem. This city was ruled by Melchisedec, as indicated in the scripture: ‘Thou art a priest forever after the rank of Melchisedec’ (Ps. 109:4). The psalmist does not mention ‘according to the order of Aaron’ but instead refers to ‘Melchisedec.’ What significance is found in this phrasing? Clearly, this points to Christ. However, what does 'according to the order of Melchisedec' signify? Aaron engaged in the act of offering sacrifices and the spilling of blood from sacrificial creatures. In contrast, Melchisedec did not perform these rites; instead, he consistently provided bread and wine.

Hence, the reference is made 'according to the rank of Melchisedec.' The Hebrew states: ‘And in Salim a shadow was made unto Him.’ Note the meaning: symbolically, the Lord finds no shade where peace is absent. Where there are conflicts and disagreements, God cannot be a refuge. We can also draw from the Septuagint. God's presence is within a peaceful soul, whereas an unrestful spirit has no sanctuary for Him. ‘My peace I give unto you, my peace I leave unto you’ (John 14:27). This represents the inheritance of the Saviour. ‘And His dwelling place is in Zion.’ Taken literally, we can refer to Jerusalem and Zion since a temple existed there. However, in a figurative sense, we assert that God's presence resides on this mountain. ‘Zion’ translates to 'tower.' Therefore, in the soul that understands the Scriptures and doctrine, God dwells.

Theodoret of Cyrus

Following the devastation of that crowd, those who survived took to flight, becoming heralds of God's mighty works; thus, they were spared from the fate of the others. Afterward, the city experienced tranquility, and everyone came to understand that it was truly God's desire to reside in Zion. The prophet subsequently reveals how the Lord is ‘established’ in Judah.

If, as Origen and Eusebius suggest, Jerusalem had not experienced repeated invasions and subjugation, one might conclude that these statements pertain to the earthly Jerusalem. However, due to its frequent conflicts and lack of tranquility, it is more fitting to interpret peace as relating to the individual who lives harmoniously with others out of love, as well as with their own passions, which they have learned to conquer. This individual becomes a suitable vessel for the presence of God. Furthermore, Zion, which translates to "high place" or "watchtower," can be understood as one who stands vigilant against the encroachments of evil, in line with Origen’s perspective.

Theodoret observes that when the Assyrian forces were vanquished, the survivors fled and became heralds of divine might. From that moment, Jerusalem was regarded as set apart as the dwelling of God, a place of great peace, leading many to believe that God favored to reside in Zion. It is imperative that we strive to extinguish the disturbances of our passions, so that we might cultivate the peace that transcends all understanding and become the habitation of the Divine, serving as guardians of truth and righteousness. The essence of Zion, meaning "high place" or "watchtower," reflects this role. Just as a sinner yields space to the adversary, so too does the righteous allow the presence of God to reign in their minds, desiring to dwell and walk within us. Athanasius notes that concerning the exalted region of Judah, from which affliction, grief, and lamentation have departed, it is clear that there exists a place of serenity.

John Cassian

Blessed David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, articulated this divine order in the following manner: Firstly, he declared that God resides in Judaea, which symbolizes the soul that hesitates to confess its sins; for Judaea signifies acknowledgment of wrongdoing. In Israel, referring to the one who perceives God (or, as some interpret it, the righteousness of God), God is not merely present, but His name is exalted. Next, as he invites us to aspire towards greater realities and seeks to reveal the specific location where the Lord finds solace, he proclaims, "And His place was made in the world" (Psalms 75:2-4). This place is not found amidst the chaos of conflict or the battles against vice, but in the serenity of purity and the enduring calmness of the heart.

Thus, anyone privileged to attain this sanctuary of peace after conquering carnal desires will ascend from this level to become spiritual Zion, wherein he beholds God and becomes His dwelling place. The Lord does not reside in mere acts of abstinence; rather, He dwells in the steadfast practice of virtues, where sin no longer has dominion, and where the power of the fiery darts of lust has been decisively shattered.

Envisioning any form or notion while engaged in prayer is not only unhelpful but also potentially detrimental. The mind should be directed towards the presence of God, as St. Neil elucidates, referencing the words of the Psalm: and indeed, he states, there exists His dwelling in the world (Psalm 75:3). True peace is found in the absence of all thoughts, whether they are favorable or unfavorable.

Seraphim of Sarov

18th centuryChurch Father

Spiritual vitality is evident when an individual turns his thoughts inward and engages deeply within his heart. At this moment, divine grace binds him, leading him to a state of tranquility, characterized by a clear conscience, and in the temporal realm, as the mind reflects on the grace of the Holy Spirit, consistent with the scripture: In the world is His place.

When a person strives to cultivate a humble spirit and nurtures thoughts that are calm rather than resentful, the schemes of the adversary fail to take hold. For where there is serenity of heart, there dwells the Lord God Himself: In peace, it is said, is His place.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

In a straightforward interpretation, the Prophet explains why God's presence is more pronounced in Judea than elsewhere: He selected Jerusalem as His residence, akin to a spiritual capital, with Zion serving as His stronghold. God designated a specific location in the world for His tabernacle, which was located in the city known as Salim, meaning peace in Hebrew. Within the city of Jerusalem, His dwelling was established in Zion, considered the most esteemed area. The Hebrew text initially states that His tabernacle was set up in Salim; however, since Salim embodies the concept of peace, the seventy translators transformed the term from a proper noun to a common noun, interpreting it as in peace.

This is why Melchizedek, the king of Salem, is referred to as the king of peace (Hebrews 7:2). Therefore, the phrase in the world here represents not virtue but rather the notion of peace, as shown in the subsequent phrase: His dwelling is in Zion. This implies that God is particularly present in the hearts of those who possess peace and are deeply engaged in theological contemplation. Just as Salim represents peace, Zion stands for a high elevation. Thus, anyone who is not at peace with God and within themselves is unable to experience a theophany, much less achieve unity with God.

Ultimately, in Christ the Author of all that is good, who is celebrated with songs of gratitude and glorified eternally. This Psalm was inspired by the Holy Spirit and conveyed to David through Asaph, the leader of the singers, so that he might proclaim a message of joy to the Jews, heralding the forthcoming victory over Sennacherib, king of Assyria (4 Sam. 19:35). This victory symbolizes the triumph of the Holy Church over all its oppressors, a reward bestowed by God through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15:57).

Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the Holy Spirit intertwines the tenets of Christian faith with Jewish history, providing comfort to the Jew who perceives these words in their most straightforward meaning while simultaneously bringing joy to the Christian who grasps their deeper significance.
