The Church Fathers on this verse

Daniel 2:9Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

If, therefore, you tell me not the dream, there is one sentence concerning you, that you have also framed a lying interpretation, and full of deceit, to speak before me till the time pass away. Tell me, therefore, the dream, that I may know that you also give a true interpretation thereof.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Please share the dream so that I may understand its true significance. The Chaldeans responded to the king, "There is no mortal who can carry out your demand, O king. Enchanters, diviners, and all those versed in secular knowledge acknowledge that predicting the future is beyond human ability and is the domain of God. This illustrates that the prophets who spoke of what was to come did so through the Spirit of God."

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The king responded, stating, "Truly, I realize that you will waste no time; for you see that the matter has slipped from me. However, if you fail to reveal the dream to me, I am certain that your words are deceitful and misleading, and that you will meet among yourselves until the moment has passed. Disclose to me my dream, and then we shall see if you can also explain its meaning." The request encapsulated in these statements is both unreasonable and irrational, yet the charge is quite valid: you seek to uncover the dream, the king asserts, so that you can fabricate an interpretation together, misleading me as is customary, using the passage of time to your advantage while awaiting the moment of realization. Upon hearing this, the Chaldeans—who likely felt a certain boldness in the king's presence—offered a firm response and completely declined to remind him of the dream.
