Ezekiel 12:7Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

I did therefore as he had commanded me: I brought forth my goods by day, as the goods of one that removeth: and in the evening I digged through the wall with my hand, and I went forth in the dark, and was carried on men's shoulders in their sight.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

What was commanded of him, he attests to having fulfilled in practice, and there is no necessity to interpret this in relation to any existing opinions concerning the prior explanations. It is noteworthy that while Jeremiah was prophesying in Jerusalem, Ezekiel was delivering his messages in Babylon. The prophecy from Jeremiah was directed toward the captives, while Ezekiel’s was for those residing in Jerusalem. This dual prophecy illustrates the sovereignty of the one God across diverse lands, ensuring that the listeners recognize that the events affecting the people were not governed by the might of idols, but rather by the decree of the Lord.
