Seir is a mountainous region associated with the Idumeans, who are descendants of Esau. This lineage harbored a deep-seated animosity toward the Jews, taking pleasure in the misfortunes that struck them. To these people, the Sovereign Lord announces a dire warning of ultimate ruin. The phrase "My hand will stretch out against you" is used metaphorically to express profound wrath, drawing on the imagery of those who strike with their hands. It is important to acknowledge that God's nature is compassionate, and such expressions in Scripture correspond to the intensity appropriate for the audience. Following this declaration of judgment, God provides the rationale for His actions.
