The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

I will instill in them a deep fear of the sword upon all my hills, declares the Lord God. Following the earthquake that comes before it, I will fill them with apprehension and terror from their foes, causing them to flee in confusion, unable to recognize one another. They will turn against each other. This is what He meant when He declared, "A man's sword shall be upon his brother," and I will bring judgment upon him with death and bloodshed. They will not only bring ruin upon themselves; I will strike them from above with my might. I will unleash floods, hailstones, and fire mixed with sulfur upon him and all those who accompany him. I will be exalted, glorified, and made holy; I will reveal my name to many nations, and they will understand that I am the Lord. At the time of their impending ruin, those who have not known me will become aware of my power, and they will bow before my authority.
