Theodoret of Cyrus
This, as we can observe, is being realized in our time; for as we have multiplied, we have become complacent. This was also predicted by the Lord, who declared, "When iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of many shall wax cold" (Matt. 24:12). Hence, He refers to those who are superficial, accepting teachings only on the surface, as melinas; for melinas are shallow, holding only surface-level water. He indicates that such individuals will not achieve healing, yet they are not without purpose to others; for those who face discipline may serve to benefit others. Thus it is stated, "They shall be seasoned with salt;" for it is not solely the word of instruction that brings us improvement and good, but also the discipline that comes as a result of sin.
