Ezekiel 47:12Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And by the torrent on the banks thereof on both sides shall grow all trees that bear fruit: their leaf shall not fall off, and their fruit shall not fail: every month shall they bring forth firstfruits, because the waters thereof shall issue out of the sanctuary: and the fruits thereof shall be for food, and the leaves thereof for medicine.

It was not the produce of ancient trees but rather that of fresh ones. Fresh trees, as he indicates, bear new fruit. “Having stripped off the old self with its practices, and having clothed yourselves with the new” (Col. 3:9, 10). Do you see how grace is anticipated? Observe how appropriately the Lord corrected Nicodemus, “You are a teacher of Israel, and yet do not understand this?” (John 3:10).

Regarding the phrase, “The Lord reigns; let the earth be glad” (Ps. 96:1), and concerning the statement, “when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father” (1 Cor. 15:24), and on the sacrament of baptism, Hales references an anonymous author linked to discussions “On the Serpent” and “On Seals.” Dupin attributes it to Bishop Severian of Gavala, while Lampe connects it to Blessed Theodoret of Cyrus, noting that the interpretation aligns closely with that of Bishop Markell of Ancyra.

And upon the river shall arise, and along its banks shall flourish both the branches, every tree of bitterness. Their fruit shall provide nourishment, and their bounty shall promote well-being. This reflects the prophet's message regarding those who are exemplary in their actions and words, who present offerings, tithes, and gifts during their new moons and festivals, united and strengthened by the might of God. Each month shall bring forth fresh fruit from these trees, nourished by waters drawn from the sanctuary, delivering sustenance and promoting growth for health. This symbolizes the life-giving and redemptive ordinances.

Those who immerse themselves in these waters, meaning those who adhere to the law, will resemble mighty trees flourishing beside a stream, described as ‘like a tree planted by the waters that flow out, that shall yield its fruit’ (Psalm 1:3).

The foliage of the tree will remain vibrant, and its fruit will never be lacking or diminished; instead, it will flourish month after month, bringing forth a bountiful harvest of first fruits. The source of these waters flows from the holy ones, and their yield will provide sustenance while healing accompanies their blessings. This signifies that these trees will perpetually produce fruitful yields, not merely annually but monthly. The holy ones do not observe the law of God only during sacred occasions; they uphold it consistently throughout their lives. The leaves, it is stated, will not wither away, as the performance of good deeds brings forth divine satisfaction. The entirety of their fruit is for nourishment, and we hold in awe the ascetics who embody virtue.

Their prosperity contributes to wellness, for when we contemplate the immense goodness of life ordered by God, we experience benefits that lead us to divine health. Following this, the Prophet receives information regarding the borders of Israel. He specifies that from the north, the boundary is to Imath, which is known as the limit of Damascus. Imath is referred to as Epiphany, with others calling it Emessa; two cities with the same name are acknowledged in sacred scripture. The Prophet states, "To Imath the great." From the east, he identifies the Jordan as the boundary, and from the south, it extends to the waters of the forerunner, according to the translation of the Syrian interpreter: Mari Moth. To the west, the sea will serve as the limit. God ordained that this land be allocated not only to the descendants of Israel but also to the strangers residing among them, as it is recorded, who have born children in your midst. Additionally, in every tribe, the aliens dwelling among them will receive an inheritance alongside the tribe itself, as noted by the prophet.
