John Chrysostom

Observe how she expresses her gratitude to the Lord for each child, acknowledging His grace: she proclaims, "the Lord has heard that I am despised, and has granted me another child!" Consequently, she named him Simeon. Notice that she refrains from naming those born by chance; she chose the name Simeon for her son because the Lord listened to her plea. In Hebrew, this name signifies "heard."

In revisiting my earlier points, it can be observed that Leah, the elder sister, can be compared to the Jewish synagogue, while Rachel represents the Gentile Church. With this understanding as the groundwork for our discussion, we shall proceed to explore further aspects of this theme. The first, as is known, gave birth to four sons. The first of these sons signifies a large assembly of Jews, representative of the synagogue, which is the oldest in history. 4:22), and is also reflected in the words of Isaiah: “Hear, O heavens, and take heed, O earth: for the Lord saith, I have brought up and exalted sons, but they have revolted against Me” (Isaiah 1:2). Additionally, these children were born of free individuals, as their forebears were not burdened by the law. This is underscored by Paul, who states, “I lived once without the law” (Rom. 7:9). He connects the term 'az' to the essence of their lineage and attributes it to the patriarchs.
