John Chrysostom

Lift your gaze and observe, they are all assembling, coming to you. They are gathered around you, countless in number, not like those who were dispersed during their exile, but united and collective, they will be directed by God as their leader. Witness the dedication and diversity of their return, which came at various times. The return of some and the staying of others manifested God's might. He proclaims, I rescued you from your bondage, yet you did not believe in My intention to set you free. Once more, I will withdraw My aid, and you will revert to your previous state, once again bound and constrained, until you understand that I alone have achieved both your liberation and your restraint.

To affirm the collective return, He swears: I live, says the Lord, you shall be clothed with them like a garment, and adorned with them like a bride. Through these words, the prophet reveals the wretched condition from which they were rescued and the glory to which they have ascended. They have been freed from captivity, their city has been restored, and all the structures that had been demolished are rebuilt; not as when they left Egypt in the fifth generation, totaling six hundred thousand. What can we conclude? Did God create humanity with the intention that they would multiply and fill the earth over a long period? This is not the case; God can increase the number of righteous individuals even in a small space.

The sacred and divinely inspired Scriptures affirm that the descendants of Israel, known as the children of earthly Zion, will inherit the blessings of Christ in the final days. It is written that they will turn to the Lord their God and to David their king, rejoicing in the Lord and His goodness in these latter days (Hos. 3:5). While they were in unbelief, the church of the Gentiles emerged, which we refer to as spiritual Zion. Yet they too will be summoned; they will unite as one flock under one Shepherd (John 10:16), and thus, the distinction of two Zions will disappear, integrating into a singular Church under the governance of the One Shepherd, the Lord of all.

To affirm this promise, He spoke to the Jewish people, declaring, “Lift up your eyes round about, and see all things: behold, they are gathered together, and come unto you: I live, says the Lord, for you shall clothe yourself with them all, and shall be adorned like a bride” (beauty). They were scattered due to the absence of a shepherd. One of the holy prophets, speaking as if for Christ, proclaimed, “And I will say, ‘I cannot shepherd you, and that which dies shall die, and that which fades away shall vanish, and the rest shall feed every flesh of their neighbor’” (Zechariah 11:9). This foretells a complete abandonment of the mercy and love of God, leading to untold harm. They will be yielded to those who wish to ruin them and lead them astray according to the desires of the lawless one. They will be severed from God, influenced by misguided spirits, as it is written: “part of the fox will be” (Ps. 62:11). Teachings (of these spirits) and various passions will affect us, as the wise Paul observed, for some have been led astray in the passions of dishonor and in a depraved mind (Rom. 1:26, 28).

Thus, what does the divine word promise through these teachings? It speaks of the calling and gathering of the dispersed, the spiritual awakening of the lost, the return of those who fled, and the conversion and vigilance rewarded by love for Christ: “Look round,” He says, “and behold all; behold they are gathered together, and unto you." To assure the faithful, He swears an oath to confirm His promise, saying, “I live, says the Lord, that you shall be adorned with the beauty of the bride by them all, for the glory of the Churches lies in their unity amidst diversity.” Therefore, it is fitting for the Scriptures to portray the Church as adorned in splendid and richly decorated garments (Psalm 44:10). Just as multi-faceted and precious stones set in gold create an extraordinary ornament, so the souls of the saints, adorned with the blessings of their virtues, shine with radiant beauty before God. Consequently, each one, giving thanks to Christ, exclaims: “Let my soul rejoice in the Lord; for He hath clothed me with the robe of salvation, and with the garment of gladness: as a bridegroom, He hath crowned me, and as a bride, He hath adorned me with beauty” (Is. 61:10).

The Beauty of Zion In His physical suffering, Christ redeemed the nations through His sacrifice. His burial cloth symbolizes the nations, as Scripture declares: I live, says the Lord, ‘You shall be clothed with them all as a garment, and you shall be arrayed with them as a bride’ (Is 49:18). Additionally, it is written, They shall perish, but Thou shalt endure; they shall all wear out like a garment, and like a garment Thou shalt change them, and they shall be transformed (Ps 101:27). Thus, through His blood, the Lord purified us from our transgressions, not for His own, as He was sinless.

Spiritual harmony This process fosters belief in the one Lord, and such belief opens the door to salvation; through it, individuals gain an understanding of God through baptism and perform numerous wondrous deeds in the anticipation of everlasting life, with their spirits resembling the diverse gems in the crown of the Church.

When inquiring about the significance of the Lord's robes, which are as white as snow, we can confidently explain that they represent the Church of His holy ones. As Isaiah proclaimed, ‘Thou shalt clothe them all as with a garment.’
