Hesychius of Jerusalem

5th centuryChurch Father

Eliphaz remarks that you have neglected prayer. He expresses that he would have entrusted his situation to the Lord. However, you have become indifferent and ceased to seek the Almighty. This is the reason for the hardships you are experiencing. Following his statements, Eliphaz gives glory to God, which incites Job's wrath.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

Thus, it is futile for Job to seek help from someone powerful or pure: adversity will inevitably follow the unrighteous; even if he enjoys a fleeting success, he swiftly meets his end along with his entire household. It is indeed the case that every individual is fated to endure suffering from the moment of birth; however, supplication to the Almighty and Just One rescues those who revere Him, while only the ungodly are brought low. The afflictions experienced by the righteous should be embraced with gladness, as they serve as a promise of future blessings. This understanding comes from experience, Eliphaz concludes, and within this framework, Job ought to reflect upon his life.
