The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

Once the hunger was appeased and the dining items were cleared away, the violent men burst into the dwelling and encircled it. The elderly man then offered his unmarried daughter along with her companion, who shared her bed, to the wicked men, as long as they refrained from harming his visitor. When his initial words failed to dissuade them, he expressed his willingness to surrender his virgin daughter, enduring deep sorrow as a father, so that the sacred law of hospitality would remain intact; to him, the collective sin was far more unbearable than his own dishonor.
