Theophylact of Bulgaria
Observe the disciples and the contrast in their humanity. Moved with compassion for the people, they approach Christ and earnestly intercede on their behalf.
Send them away, that going into the next villages and towns, they may buy themselves meat to eat.
απολυσον αυτους ινα απελθοντες εις τους κυκλω αγρους και κωμας αγορασωσιν εαυτοις αρτους τι γαρ φαγωσιν ουκ εχουσιν

Observe the disciples and the contrast in their humanity. Moved with compassion for the people, they approach Christ and earnestly intercede on their behalf.
The Lord showed His mercy: with only five loaves and two fish, He miraculously fed five thousand listeners through His abundant grace, leaving each of the apostles with a basketful of leftovers. This event echoed the manna given in the wilderness and other miraculous signs from the Old Testament. The crowd, astonished by such a sign, recognized Him as the prophet foretold by Moses and sought to proclaim Jesus as their king. However, He withdrew to the mountain to pray in solitude, instructing His disciples to return across the water without Him. Consequently, the people were left without their wished-for king.
The extraordinary event of feeding more than five thousand individuals with merely five loaves of bread and two fish occurred as Jesus and His disciples arrived at a remote lakeshore, devoid of any settlements. The multitude that had gathered awaited Jesus but found no place to stay or food to eat. As evening approached, the apostles approached Jesus with a heartfelt plea, saying, “The place here is deserted, and the time is late; let the people go, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves” (Matthew 14:15).
As the evening approached and the sun started to dip behind the hills to the west, the crowd remained, captivated by Christ's miraculous words and sacred teachings. The twilight of the east would soon fade, leaving this eager assembly, who had disregarded even their most basic needs in their fervor, in a state of darkness, hungry and distant from any source of sustenance. The disciples felt anxious that the day might end poorly, potentially inciting further hostility from those who were already adversarial towards their Master.
They approached Jesus Christ and said, “The place is deserted, the time has elapsed; allow them to leave so they can go to the nearby villages and purchase provisions for themselves, for they have no food.”
