Augustine of Hippo

Narrow Paths These paths are not broad, and they are difficult for many to traverse; however, instruct me in your narrow paths, which are recognized by only a select few.

Disclose Your ways to me, O Lord, and instruct me in Your paths (Psalms 24:4): not the wide ones that lead many to ruin; (Matthew 7:13) instead, guide me in Your narrow paths, which are familiar to but a few.

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

The paths of Christ are akin to the routes toward a fulfilling life, guided by Him who proclaimed, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life (Jn 14:6). The ultimate path is the Power of God, for Christ serves as our guide and the righteous way that has ushered the faithful into the heavenly kingdom. The ways of the Lord are indeed just, as it is written, Thy ways, O Lord, reveal them to me. Chastity, faith, and temperance represent the essence of virtue; however, there exists also the path of wickedness, as stated, And see whether I have the way of iniquity (Ps 138:24).

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

I pray above all for the ability to recognize Your ways so that I may understand the paths that guide me to You. I desire to consistently walk in the righteous and true way. Additionally, I seek a profound knowledge of You as my Savior, as I anticipate Your unwavering lovingkindness. The Prophet expressed this sentiment by saying, "All the day," indicating a continual commitment rather than a sporadic intention.

Euthymios Zigabenos

In this passage, David conveys his profound longing using various terms such as ways and paths, just as he does in many expressions found throughout the Psalms. He reiterates these concepts to illustrate his deep and sincere yearning. Therefore, the terms ways and paths represent all that is righteous. The one who navigates these godly endeavors proceeds toward God without falter. David seeks divine guidance to learn the works that please Him, acknowledging the precision required in such endeavors; thus, the worthy are instructed in the principles that come directly from God.

Some interpret paths and ways as the arrangement of matters governed by God's Providence. The prophet desires to gain a clearer understanding of how all things are ordered to achieve both a contemplative and active knowledge. The broader principles are referred to as ways, while the more specific ones are termed paths. Additionally, commandments can also be identified as ways and paths. David, having acquired knowledge from the Divine Law, wishes to understand them through practice, moving beyond merely intellectual comprehension to experiential knowledge.

Cyril of Alexandria correlates the ways with the teachings of the Gospel and the paths with the practices of a godly life; those among the Gentiles who once followed the ways and desires of the adversary now seek to learn both.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

When referring to the ways of the Lord, he signifies the divine law, which serves as the sole path leading us to God. The Lord states, “If thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matthew 19:17). The Prophet seeks the Lord’s assistance in facing temptations, emphasizing the type of aid he longs for most deeply by expressing, “Lord, tell me Your ways, that I may walk in the way of Your commandments. And teach me Thy ways,” meaning, reveal to me the path of Your sacred law. Through this enlightenment, I shall evade the scorn of the adversary and shall not feel disgrace, while those who now challenge me with their trials will find themselves in shame. He seeks to learn the law of the Lord not through mere intellectual grasp but with a desire for active engagement; he longs for the grace that will persuade his will to willingly observe the commandments.

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

19th centuryCommentator

Divine commandments serve as the ways and paths through which the Truth guides humanity throughout life, declaring that to attain eternal life, one must observe the commandments (Matthew 19:17).
