  1. 1

The praise of a canticle for David. He that dwelleth in the aid of the most High, shall abide under the protection of the God of Jacob.

The Fathers read this verse as praise of trust in God. According to Theodoret of Cyrus, David foresaw Hezekiah, who overcame the Assyrian forces through faith in God. Athanasius the Great finds in the psalm God's triumph over spiritual foes, and Hesychius of Jerusalem takes the help of the Most High as God's law against unseen adversaries.
