You have created idols for yourself and engaged in unfaithfulness to Me; with the gold of the nations that I provided, you fashioned male figures and turned to them in infidelity. God refers to this betrayal as whoredom, indicating that the community has pledged itself to the false gods of the nations, selecting them as their lords, guardians, and deliverers, while fervently adorning them and partaking in the detestable acts of idolatry. The Jewish people debated the nature of these false deities: "One god favors certain things, another delights in different offerings, and yet another finds joy in sacrifices." Through all these inquiries, the community was led astray, turning away from the God who cherishes purity and righteousness.

Jerome of Stridon

The Lord explicitly commanded that censers, bowls, lampstands, and the ark of the covenant be crafted, primarily from gold or gilded materials, with some items made from silver. Yet, Jerusalem corrupted these sacred objects, transforming them into idols such as Baal, Hamos, Astarte, and Melchom. In a spiritual context, we create idols from the gold and silver found in the Holy Scriptures when we misinterpret the gift of understanding and eloquence, distorting them through heretical views and extending our words to the heavens while our actions remain grounded (Psalm 72). The images that accompany all forms of heresy are deemed masculine because individuals believe they are honoring the mightiest constructs of their creation, which they think are impervious to any challenge.

These are the images born from our hearts, destined for destruction in the heavenly Jerusalem, as the prophet declares, O Lord, in thy hail thou shalt abase their image (Psalms 72:20). It is written about anyone who has lost the likeness of God: For a man walketh in an image, but he is wasted (Psalm 38:7). However, we embrace one true man and revere one image, the image of the invisible and all-powerful God.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

When you accept silver and gold from Me, you elevate the gifts I provide above My service, fashioning them into your deities, which you refer to as human likenesses. In a metaphorical way, you equate idolatry with unfaithfulness.
