Theodoret of Cyrus
These individuals are regarded as righteous. He referred to them as ‘righteous men,’ not to affirm their own righteousness, for they were deeply unjust, lawless, and exceedingly wicked. Rather, he labeled them righteous in relation to the sinful nature of Jerusalem, implying that in comparison to your wickedness, they appear righteous. God similarly addressed Jerusalem, justifying her sisters by highlighting the sins and iniquities you have committed (Ezekiel 16:51). Thus, he asserts that these men are indeed more righteous than you. They will face retribution from the mistresses and the judgment of those who shed blood, for they are indeed mistresses, with blood on their hands. They will be held accountable for murder and adultery, their lusts becoming the judges of their fate, and they shall endure the same consequences as adulterous wives and murderers. Having provided this narrative, he renders judgment upon them.
