The Church Fathers on this verse

3 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Andrew of Caesarea

6th centuryChurch Father

"And they sang the song of Moses." By the song of Moses, we suppose that a hymn is here offered up to God by those justified under the Law before grace.

By the song of the Lamb, we suppose that those who lived righteously on earth after the coming of Christ offer Him unceasing hymnody and thanksgiving.

They do so for the mercies and benefits sent by Him upon our race, for through the divine Apostles He called all nations to the knowledge of Himself.

Borodin P.M.

19th centuryChurch Father

"Following the example of Moses, who gave praise to God for saving the Israelites from the Egyptian yoke, the righteous glorify the Lord God. He has victoriously freed them from earthly slavery and opened to them the way into the land of promise, His Heavenly Kingdom.

The song of the Lamb is a compunctionate hymn in which the works of the Savior are magnified. He granted men the wondrous power to overcome the world and all its hostile efforts" (F. Yakovlev).

Ivanov A.V.

19th centuryChurch Father

"They sang the song of Moses." It is fitting for those who triumph in the final and most important victory over the enemy to recall the first successes of their struggle, the first victories.

Such a beginning of victory, a great and difficult beginning of the struggle, was Moses' victory over Pharaoh. His song is now sung by the victors, the Christians.

Corresponding to the Red Sea, there appears here a crystalline sea, bright as a sign of the bright victory of the Lamb over His enemies.
