Ruth 4:15Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And thou shouldst have one to comfort thy soul, and cherish thy old age. For he is born of thy daughter in law: who loveth thee: and is much better to thee, than if thou hadst seven sons.

Let Tamar rejoice, for the Lord came to reveal her name to the child born from her transgression. The name she bestowed upon him (See Gen. 38:29) was a call for Your presence. You, for whom noble women were once shamed, You who grant purity to all creation! In her quiet manner, she has taken hold of that which You cherish, she who opens the path to the Kingdom! For life was grasped by her, and the sword could not end her days. Ruth lay down beside Boaz on the threshing floor for Your sake; it was her love that emboldened her in Your name, O You who instill courage in all who turn back to You. Her ears turned away from the voices of others so she could listen for Your call.

Like a smoldering ember, she approached Boaz, reclined there, and witnessed the High Priest, in whose lineage the fragrance of incense was concealed (See Ruth 4:12). She hurried and became as a heifer for Boaz, who was to bring forth You, O Bountiful Calf! She gathered ears for Your love; she collected straw. Yet, You quickly rewarded her humility: not mere ears of grain but Roots of Kings, not straw but the Sheaf of Life, You brought forth from her.

The women who presented Noemmini with the child Ovid proclaimed, "Blessed be the Lord, who has not allowed your hopes to be dashed this day; your name shall be honored in Israel, and it will bring about a transforming spirit." This signifies the comfort of Noemmini and represents, in reality, the redemption of the world. For from this moment, the salvation of all creation began.
