The Church Fathers on this verse

7 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

The desires of the flesh will not impede me, for You have broadened my affection, allowing me to rejoice even amidst these earthly matters and the physical limitations I experience. My pace remains steady, and my deeds continue unyielded, as do the marks I have left for others to follow.

Athanasius the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

In liberating me from the snares and temptations crafted by my adversaries, You have granted me freedom on my path. It is said that when an individual transitions from wrongdoing to righteousness, the journey on this narrow path can initially be challenging. However, as one perseveres, the way becomes more expansive. Moreover, through the effort invested in virtuous living, one eventually finds rest, and their foundations are fortified, for their steps are established upon solid ground. This is the essence of our belief.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

In the midst of suffering, You have granted me a broad sense of comfort, which strengthens my resolve to persist in life even until now. It is this very comfort that inspires me to continue living.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

You have made my steps secure, says the Lord, for you have cleared my path of every snare and obstacle that hindered my journey. Now I walk with confidence, unafraid of anyone seeking to ambush me. Do not become weary, O my people. In the past, as I fled from my foes, I tread carefully, trying to avoid leaving a trace that could lead my pursuers to my hiding place. But now I walk with boldness, firm in my steps, without fear that anyone can trace me. These words reflect a message for the Christian Church, expressing gratitude to God for the broadening of the path of righteousness, made evident through the daily footsteps of many believers seeking salvation. The marks of a life guided by the Gospel are not hidden or obscure; rather, they are expanding and becoming increasingly visible through the faithful lives of those who strive to live virtuously.

Eusebius of Caesarea

4th centuryTeacher of the Church

Through the journey of the Savior, the route leading from sin to righteousness, from the carnal to the spiritual, and from this temporal existence to eternal life, has been made more spacious for me. Initially, the path appeared narrow and challenging, as I navigated a formidable journey. However, as I ascended higher, I realized that the way widened before me. For one who has ascended towards the summit experiences a sense of freedom from the burdens, struggles, and heaviness of progress when embraced by the vastness ahead. Those who walk in the way of Jesus are indeed following His lead, for they traverse the path He has walked.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

The prophet continues to recount his triumphs over adversaries as manifestations of divine blessings, illustrating how the Lord, even in the tightest situations, provided him with ample avenues, enabling him to stride forward with great confidence. You, O Lord, have enlarged my steps, meaning You, O Lord, have granted me the ability to traverse even the most challenging terrains with ease; You have fortified my strength in the pursuit of my foes, granting me victory.

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

19th centuryCommentator

The followers of Christ serve as His holy emissaries, empowered to conquer threats and overcome all forms of evil, unwavering in their mission. As the Lord affirms: ‘Nothing shall harm you’ (Luke 10:19).
