    A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

    The Fathers ask why Christ calls new a commandment already known from the Law. John Chrysostom answers that its manner is new, “as I have loved you”: He loved first, repaying no debt for merits. Theophylact of Bulgaria adds that such love is given freely, even when nothing is owed. Euthymios Zigabenos says it commands loving more than oneself.
