Now, faith is the substance of things to be hoped for, the evidence of things that appear not.

For John Chrysostom, faith gives reality to what is hoped for: the resurrection has not yet happened, yet hope makes it real in the soul. It makes the unseen as certain as the visible. Theodoret of Cyrus calls faith an eye for contemplating hoped-for things. Theophylact of Bulgaria warns against wanting to see and so falling away from faith.
