John 1Church Fathers' Commentary on Every Verse

51 verses, 628 commentaries of the Church Fathers. Each verse leads to its own page with every commentary.

  1. 1

In the beginning was the Word: and the Word was with God: and the Word was God.

The Fathers read this verse as a confession of the Son's eternal divinity. Euthymios Zigabenos explains that "was" shows there was no time when the Son was not. Isidore of Pelusium unfolds the three clauses: "in the beginning" teaches co-eternity, "with God" His relation to the Father, "was God" His dignity. The name Word excludes any passible generation.
