    The Fathers take God's word here as His law, which like a lamp in the darkness points the way to virtue. John Chrysostom stresses that God gave it out of love and compassion. Theodoret of Cyrus draws a contrast: the law, like a lamp, lit only one nation, while the Savior, the sun of righteousness, enlightens the whole world.
